Korean Medical Association warns of rising COVID-19 and influenza
The Korean Medical Association (KMA) Infectious Disease Response Committee has issued a warning regarding the simultaneous rise of COVID-19 and influenza cases. The committee noted that COVID-19 hospitalizations have increased for six consecutive weeks, reaching 193 patients in the first week of September.
Influenza cases are also rising sharply, particularly among young children and elementary school students. The number of influenza-like illness patients per 1,000 outpatients reached 25.3 in the first week of September, more than 3.8 times the level recorded during the same period last year.
The KMA is urging the government to proactively monitor the supply and distribution of vaccines and COVID-19 treatments to ensure stable availability. The committee also advised the public to follow hygiene protocols, such as wearing masks in crowded indoor spaces, practicing frequent handwashing, and staying home from school or work when experiencing respiratory symptoms. High-risk groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying conditions, are encouraged to follow vaccination schedules.
