Korean National Police Agency to expand school zone speed limit relaxations

The Korean National Police Agency is expanding the implementation of time-based speed limit relaxations in school zones to reduce driver inconvenience during late-night hours. Under the new plan, the agency aims to prioritize approximately 160 locations for operation by the end of the year.

During the designated late-night period, typically from midnight to 6:00 AM, speed limits in selected school zones will be increased from the standard 30 km/h to between 40 and 50 km/h. The eligibility criteria for these zones are being broadened; previously restricted to roads with two or more lanes, the policy will now include roads with at least one lane.

To ensure safety, participating zones must meet strict requirements, including having separated sidewalks, protective fences, and automated speed enforcement equipment. Additionally, a zone must have recorded fewer than two child pedestrian accidents in the last three years. The agency noted that in 39 pilot locations, accidents decreased by 23.6% following the introduction of time-based limits. Implementation will depend on local government budgets for installing necessary signage and infrastructure.
