Korean sci-fi film Hope breaks U.S. box office records
The Korean sci-fi film ‘Hope’, starring Michael Fassbender, has become the third-highest-grossing Korean film in U.S. box office history. With approximately $7 million earned domestically since its September 9 release, it has surpassed the U.S. total of ‘Snowpiercer’ ($4.56 million). It currently trails only ‘The King of Kings’ ($83.5 million) and Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’ ($53.8 million).
Globally, the film has earned roughly $44 million against a reported $46 million budget, with over $35 million of that total coming from South Korea. Director Na Hong-jin has indicated plans for a sequel or potentially a trilogy, noting that the story required more depth than a single film could provide. He suggested the follow-up might feature a darker tone and a narrative shift involving the protagonist.
