Korian project uses photography to aid Alzheimer’s patients
The Korian project, ‘Capturing the present when the past fades’, uses digital photography to help residents in nursing homes (RSA) with Alzheimer’s or severe cognitive decline express themselves. Launched in 2020, the initiative has expanded into a national program involving approximately 400 residents across 40 facilities in six Italian regions.
In the Puglia region, eight Korian facilities are participating. The project utilizes photography because it is an intuitive, physical gesture that does not require technical expertise, allowing residents to share their perspectives without external influence from educators.
To understand the deeper meaning behind the images, staff cross-reference the photographs with each patient’s social history and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) results. The captured images are being showcased in an exhibition dedicated to families, caregivers, and visitors.
