Korle-Bu cardiologist warns of high sodium in koobi and momoni

Dr. Albert Agbi, a cardiologist at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has issued a warning regarding the high sodium content in koobi (salted tilapia) and momoni (fermented and salted fish). These ingredients are staple flavor bases in many Ghanaian soups, stews, and sauces.

Dr. Agbi explained that excessive sodium intake causes the body to retain fluid, which increases blood pressure and places additional strain on the heart and blood vessels. Over time, this can lead to serious health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

Rather than suggesting a total ban on these traditional foods, the specialist advised Ghanaians to consume them in moderation. He recommended balancing diets with potassium-rich foods, such as bananas and coconut water, and emphasized the importance of portion control and regular exercise to prevent lifestyle-related conditions.
