Kornelije Stanković: 195th anniversary of the Serbian composer's birth

The renowned Serbian composer, conductor, and melographer Kornelije Stanković was born 195 years ago on August 23, 1831. Born in the Taban district of Budim, he was the first Serb to receive high-level musical education.

Stanković pursued advanced studies in Vienna under Professor Simon Sechter, where he mastered harmony, counterpoint, piano, and composition. His early works included waltzes and quadrilles influenced by the Viennese style. Later, inspired by the work of Vuk Karadžić, he became a national romantic, focusing on collecting and arranging traditional folk music. His notable contributions include the musical arrangement of the Saint Sava hymn, ‘Uskliknimo s ljubavlju’ (Let us cry out with love).
