Kos court acquits 83-year-old man of sexual abuse charges

An 83-year-old man has been acquitted by the Mixed Jury Court of Kos due to reasonable doubt regarding allegations of sexual abuse against his 8-year-old granddaughter. The man had been in pretrial detention for nearly 12 months.

The defense successfully challenged the credibility of the initial complaint. A key witness reportedly admitted to conducting a physical examination of the child prior to the forensic medical exam and acknowledged financial motives and efforts to mislead authorities for monetary gain.

Furthermore, supplementary medical reports from forensic experts and surgeons attributed physical findings to pathological inflammation rather than sexual abuse. Child psychiatric reports also expressed scientific reservations, noting a confusion between real and imaginary elements in the child's testimony. The child's mother also stated she did not believe in the defendant's guilt.
