Kosi River embankment breaches threaten villages in Bihar

Severe flooding in Bihar's Bhagalpur district has led to two significant embankment breaches caused by the rising pressure of the Kosi River. In the Rangra Chowk block of Naugachia, a 15-meter section of the old railway line embankment collapsed near Bania village, sending water rapidly into surrounding areas including Sadhopur, Masudanpur, Baisi, and Bhawanipur.

In a separate incident in Gopalpur, approximately 10 meters of the Brahmoत्तर embankment breached following heavy rain and storms. This area had been under observation after leaks were detected four days prior. Local authorities and residents are working to contain the water flow to prevent larger breaches that could impact significant populations.

The flooding has displaced thousands, with 27,954 people currently residing in relief camps. To assist those stranded for over five days, the Disaster Management Department has announced direct financial aid of 7,000 rupees per family. Additionally, the floods have disrupted education, with roughly 5,000 schools in the Kosi region submerged or being used as relief centers.
