Justina Široka Pulja elected President of Kosovo
Justina Široka Pulja, an economist and academic, has been elected as the new President of Kosovo. She secured 81 votes in the first round of voting within the 120-seat parliament, narrowly surpassing the required two-thirds threshold. Her election occurred shortly before the constitutional deadline, effectively averting the need for snap parliamentary elections and resolving a period of intense political deadlock.
The election followed a pragmatic compromise between the ruling Vetëvendosje Movement, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), led by Bedri Hamza. As part of the agreement, lawmakers also approved amendments to the legal framework governing the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, the Hague-based court established to prosecute war crimes from the 1998-2000 conflict.
Prior to her presidency, Široka Pulja served as the President of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo and held the position of Minister of Energy and Mines from 2008 to 2011. In her inaugural address, she pledged to serve all citizens and work toward unity, justice, and the strengthening of Kosovo's institutions.
