Kosovo authorities launch inspections of bakery bread weights and scales

The Metrology Agency of Kosovo (AMK), in collaboration with the Central Inspectorate of Market Surveillance (IQMT), has launched an inspection campaign targeting bakeries across Kosovo. The initiative aims to verify the weight of bread and the accuracy of scales used by bakery operators.

The action follows numerous consumer complaints regarding discrepancies between the declared weight of bread and its actual weight. Inspections began in the Pristina region and are expected to expand to other municipalities throughout the country. Officials are also checking whether economic operators possess the necessary approvals for minimum technical conditions.

Under consumer protection laws, discrepancies in product weight are considered consumer fraud and can result in fines ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 euros. Additionally, the use of unregulated scales or measuring tools may incur fines between 500 and 1,500 euros for legal entities. Authorities have urged bakery owners to ensure timely scale verification and to comply with legal requirements.
