Kosovo debates US LNG project over energy security concerns

Deputy Hykmete Bajrami of the Democratic League of Kosovo warned that the government's refusal of a U.S. LNG project jeopardises Kosovo's energy security, raises electricity costs and threatens economic competitiveness. She said the decision deepens reliance on imported power, burdens businesses and may damage Kosovo‑U.S. relations, calling for transparent cost analyses and alternatives.

Energy expert Adhurim Haxhimusa echoed the criticism, calling an alternative gas‑from‑thëngjilli scheme technically, financially and environmentally unviable. He noted the project conflicts with new EU environmental rules and lacks financing from international banks, making it impractical as a substitute for the U.S. gas option.
