Kosovo political turmoil as LDK leadership clash stalls coalition talks

Kosovo’s political scene is in flux as internal disputes within the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) hinder progress on forming a governing coalition. The constitutional deadline for convening a new assembly is approaching, and analysts warn that without an agreement between LDK and the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) the country may face fresh elections. Former prime minister Avdullah Hoti said the extraordinary parliamentary session to decide Abdixhiku’s fate is unrelated to coalition negotiations with Vetëvendosje (LVV), while former PDK deputy Xhavit Haliti argued any partnership with LVV must be based on a four‑year government programme, not merely the presidential vote. The deadlock raises doubts about securing the 18 votes needed to elect a president, prompting the acting president to schedule a constitutive assembly session for early August. The stalemate underscores the fragile balance of power among Kosovo’s major parties and the risk of a political impasse.
