Kosovo inflation reaches 7.8 percent amid rising costs

Kosovo experienced an annual inflation rate of 7.8 percent in September, according to data from the Kosovo Agency of Statistics. This rise has prompted calls from economic leaders and experts for government intervention to mitigate the impact on citizens and businesses.

Lulzim Rafuna, chairman of the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce, has urged the government to consider reducing excise duties and VAT on oil derivatives to ease the burden. He noted that rising electricity prices, increased costs for oil derivatives, and geopolitical developments are key drivers of the inflation. Additionally, economist Bashkim Mustafa highlighted that Kosovo's high dependence on imports leaves the local economy vulnerable to international price fluctuations.

In the agricultural sector, production prices also saw an increase during the third quarter of 2026. Data indicates a 1.4 percent rise in overall agricultural production prices, with livestock products increasing by 3.1 percent and plant products by 0.8 percent. Residents in cities like Mitrovica have reported significant difficulties managing daily expenses, particularly pensioners and low-income families, as wages and pensions fail to keep pace with rising costs.
