Kosovo election sees record low turnout as over 1.2 million abstain

In the snap parliamentary election held on 7 June, voter participation in Kosovo fell to 36.88 % of the 2,092,174 eligible citizens, down from 44.99 % in the December 2025 vote. About 1.25 million eligible voters did not cast a ballot, the lowest turnout in recent years.

Candidates from the major parties have been tallied, with the Central Election Commission reporting that 92.79 % of votes have been counted. Prime Minister Albin Kurti led the field with 42.91 % of the vote, followed by the Democratic Party of Kosovo (21.12 %) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (17.58 %). The top ten vote‑receivers include Kurti (256,892 votes), Glauk Konjufca (203,723), and other party leaders.

Analysts and citizens cited repeated elections, election fatigue and disappointment with politicians as key reasons for the abstention. Residents such as Beqir Leftaj, Ilaz Azemi and Lulzim Bajraktari warned that the public is “tired” and “disillusioned,” while Gëzim Camaj suggested the trend reflects a growing European‑style disengagement. The low turnout is being interpreted as a message to parties for more efficient governance and compromise.
