Kosovo energy production at risk due to expiring power plant licenses

The energy production capacity of Kosovo faces potential risks due to the upcoming expiration of operating licenses for the Kosovo A and Kosovo B thermal power plants on October 4.

Currently, the Board of the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) lacks the necessary quorum to make decisions regarding license extensions, as it is missing a chairperson and two members. While the Ministry of Economy has selected candidates to fill these vacancies, the final appointment process requires a vote from the Assembly of Kosovo.

The Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) lacks the legal basis to continue production without these valid licenses. Experts warn that a failure to resolve this regulatory deadlock could significantly increase Kosovo's dependence on energy imports, threaten supply security, and result in substantial financial costs.
