Kosovo establishes independent ATLS program for advanced trauma care
The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) program in Kosovo has officially become an independent entity, known as ATLS Kosova. This transition marks a shift from training conducted in collaboration with international professionals to a program led and organized by local medical experts.
Developed by the American College of Surgeons, the ATLS curriculum trains physicians to rapidly assess patients with severe injuries, identify life-threatening conditions, and prioritize necessary medical interventions. While training in Kosovo began in 2023 with support from the Sanford Medical Center in the United States, the new independent structure aims to establish Kosovo as a regional leader in trauma care standards.
Mentor Ahmeti, Vice President of the Kosovo College of Surgeons, stated that the country possesses the professional capacity to make this one of the strongest ATLS courses in the Balkans. Baton Kelmendi has been appointed as the Director of ATLS Kosova, overseeing this new stage of medical education and standardized trauma treatment.
