Kosovo faces diplomatic friction over Zelensky and Vučić statements

Diplomatic tensions have escalated in the Balkans following statements from regional leaders regarding Kosovo's status and the rights of its Serbian community.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sparked backlash in Kosovo after stating in Belgrade that Ukraine does not recognize Kosovo's independence and continues to support Serbia's territorial integrity. In response, Ukrainian politician Yuriy Hudymenko criticized the stance as “shameful,” noting that Kosovo has provided significant aid to Ukrainian refugees and veterans. In Pristina, Mayor Përparim Rama ordered the removal of “Free Ukraine” banners from public spaces in reaction to the diplomatic friction, though he maintained that the solidarity of Kosovar citizens with the Ukrainian people remains unchanged.

Simultaneously, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has intensified pressure on the Serbian community in Kosovo. Vučić asserted that without the “Serbian List”—a political force representing Belgrade—the presence of Serbs in Kosovo could be jeopardized. He suggested that if a Belgrade-backed political list fails to gain trust, the Serbian community's future in the region may be at risk within two years. Vučić also accused Kosovo institutions and Western nations of pressuring Serbs and called on NATO to prevent the opening of the main bridge in Mitrovica.
