Kosovo faces potential early elections if President is not elected by October 6
Kosovo faces a potential political crisis as the Constitutional Court has set a deadline of October 6, 2026, for the election of the President. If the Assembly fails to elect a head of state by this date, the parliament will be dissolved, potentially triggering early parliamentary elections.
According to constitutional mandates, if the Assembly is dissolved on October 6, elections must be held no later than 45 days afterward. This makes November 15, 2026, a likely date for new parliamentary elections. The court noted that the 60-day period for the presidential election began on August 8.
Political tensions remain high between parliamentary parties regarding the constitution of the Assembly and the election of new institutions. Ariana Musliu-Shoshi, a deputy from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), emphasized that the party is currently prioritizing legal changes related to the Specialized Chambers to ensure institutional stability.
