Kosovo faces presidential election deadline following court ruling

The Constitutional Court of Kosovo has released a full ruling regarding the constitutionality of the Assembly's formation and the timeline for electing the President of the Republic of Kosovo. The Court determined that the 60-day constitutional deadline for electing a president began on August 8, 2026, following the expiration of the 30-day period for the Assembly's constitution on August 7.

Consequently, the Assembly must complete the presidential election procedure by October 6, 2026. Failure to elect a president within this timeframe could trigger new parliamentary elections.

Political tension remains high as parties negotiate. The Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK) has stated it is open to discussing a presidential candidate, provided the Assembly adopts amendments to the Law on Specialized Chambers to limit their mandate and introduce international oversight. Other political entities, such as the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, have maintained opposition to meetings with the current leadership until specific demands, including those regarding American gas, are met.
