Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency destroys contaminated corn and returns animal feed to Serbia

The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) in Kosovo has taken significant measures to address food safety concerns involving products imported from Serbia. The agency supervised the destruction of 5,560 kilograms of corn after laboratory analyses confirmed that levels of aflatoxin B1 exceeded permitted limits.

The destruction took place on October 29, 2026, at three different businesses: Agro Com Sh. P. K. in Fushë Kosovë, Thermo-1 Sh. P. K. in Prugoc, and NTP Te Hysi in Shtime. Aflatoxin B1 is a toxin produced by certain molds that can contaminate grains. Experts warn that long-term exposure can cause liver damage and increase cancer risks. Furthermore, if consumed by livestock, the toxin can convert to aflatoxin M1 and enter the human food chain through milk.

In a separate action, the AUV has ordered the return of 110,050 kilograms of dairy cow concentrate to Serbia. This product, imported by N. P. T. Haxhijaha SH. P. K. from the producer De Heus d. o. o., was found to contain 13 micrograms per kilogram of aflatoxin B1, surpassing legal thresholds. Inspections also revealed the presence of insect residues in the feed. The agency continues to conduct official inspections to ensure the safety of the food chain.
