Kosovo food sector faces high wheat imports amid export expansion efforts
Kosovo continues to rely on foreign imports for essential food supplies, specifically wheat. Customs data for the period of January to September 2026 shows the country imported approximately 11,433 tons of wheat, valued at 5.383 million euros. The highest monthly import value was recorded in July at roughly 851,000 euros.
While officials have previously stated that food security is ensured, the data highlights a persistent gap between domestic production capabilities and national demand. The reliance on imports underscores ongoing challenges in increasing local wheat production and supporting domestic farmers to reduce dependency on external markets.
In a separate effort to bolster the economy, eight Kosovar companies are participating in the SIAL Paris 2026 international food industry fair in France. Supported by the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation and the Kosovo Investment and Enterprise Support Agency, the companies are showcasing various agro-food products, including fruit drinks, wild mushrooms, and traditional jams, to establish new trade partnerships and expand export opportunities.
