Albin Kurti, the prime minister and leader of the Vetëvendosje (LVV), and Lumir Abdixhiku, the head of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), met several times in early August 2026. Their three‑hour meeting on 4 August did not produce a political agreement, and subsequent talks have also ended without a deal, but both sides say negotiations will continue.

Both parties stress the need to avoid new elections. Forming a new parliament requires at least 61 of the 120 seats, while a valid presidential election needs a minimum of 80 votes. LDK has rejected the speaker‑of‑parliament post as merely ceremonial and insists on a balanced power‑sharing arrangement, demanding that any president be a consensus candidate who secures at least 80 parliamentary votes and remains non‑partisan, not a “fourth pole of power.”

Former prime minister Ramush Haradinaj added that the opposition should hold either the presidency or the premiership to ensure joint decision‑making. The German embassy in Pristina warned that Kosovo cannot afford further delays in establishing the new institutions, emphasizing the urgency of a timely resolution.
