Kosovo political deadlock continues over presidential election

Kosovo is facing a significant political and constitutional impasse regarding the election of a new President. Following a series of meetings, Prime Minister Albin Kurti and LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku have expressed a shared willingness to reach a consensus on a candidate to ensure the democratic functioning of state institutions and avoid new elections.

Abdixhiku emphasized that the LDK seeks a non-partisan, respected figure who represents political unity and maintains a pro-Western orientation. While the parties have agreed on the necessary profile for the presidency, specific names have not yet been finalized. Political analyst Avni Mazreku has proposed a list of 12 potential consensual candidates to break the deadlock.

However, the crisis remains acute. Acting President Albulena Haxhiu warned that continued failure to reach an agreement could trigger new elections. Furthermore, political opposition members, including PDK and Aleanca, have refused to participate in consultative meetings with Haxhiu. Some legal experts and former officials, such as Avdullah Hoti, have raised concerns that the current state of institutional formation is unconstitutional, noting that the six-month period for an acting president is an absolute limit.
