Kosovo pursues EU integration and strategic US dialogue
Kosovo is navigating several critical political and economic developments regarding its international standing and integration. Chief Negotiator Jeton Zulfaj has asserted that Kosovo deserves EU candidate status and the opening of accession negotiations, citing significant democratic and economic progress that he claims is currently hindered by a lack of unity within the EU.
On the economic front, the European Commission is currently evaluating Kosovo's first request for disbursement under the Reform and Growth Facility. While Kosovo can potentially benefit from up to 882.6 million euros, the Commission warned that funds are at risk if required reforms are not met within specified deadlines. Additionally, the European Commission has noted positive progress regarding the Kosovo Customs, specifically in areas of terminal usage and fraud prevention.
Diplomatically, opposition parties are calling for the immediate resumption of the Strategic Dialogue with the United States to rebuild trust with American partners. Meanwhile, the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue remains stalled despite calls from EU officials, including Kaja Kallas, for both parties to implement the Ohrid Agreement. Analysts suggest the current process has failed and requires a new foundation based on equality.
