Kosovo Parliament pushes fair‑representation law amid opposition backlash

Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly Afrim Gashi said the proposed law on fair and adequate representation is the best solution and outlined the legislative timeline. The bill completed its first reading and is now under committee review for amendments, with a second reading expected in the plenary session early next week. Gashi urged deputies to finish the amendment debate soon so the law can be passed before the June 30 deadline that closes the reform agenda.

Opposition politician Ilire Dauti criticised the proposal, calling it a threat that could trigger early elections and questioning its ability to resolve ethnic‑quota issues. Dauti argued the law does not address Albanians' concerns and warned against its passage, emphasizing the need for alternative mechanisms.

The debate reflects broader political tensions in Kosovo as lawmakers aim to finalize reforms while dealing with dissent over representation and ethnic balance.
