Kosovo Police Director Gazmend Hoxha resigns after Arlinda Zekaj murder

Gazmend Hoxha has resigned as the Director General of the Kosovo Police, citing moral and institutional responsibility following the murder of 49-year-old Arlinda Zekaj in Vitomiricë, Peja. Hoxha stated in a letter to Prime Minister Albin Kurti that the current system is failing to function with the necessary level of accountability and efficiency regarding domestic violence.

The incident has triggered widespread protests in Pristina, Peja, and Mitrovica, with citizens and feminist collectives demanding justice and institutional accountability. Protesters have accused the state of failing to protect women, noting that Zekaj had repeatedly sought help from the police and prosecution before her death.

In response to the case, the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council suspended chief prosecutor Lumturije Vuçetaj and prosecutor Arlinda Nalbani-Gacafari. Additionally, 11 police officials, including regional leadership in Peja, have been suspended. Fehmi Hoti has been appointed as the acting Director General of the Kosovo Police.
