Kosovo Police Inspectorate probes Vidovdan detainee mistreatment as it celebrates 20 years

The Kosovo Police Inspectorate (IPK) announced it will investigate allegations that police officers mistreated detainees during the Vidovdan commemoration at Gazimestan on 28 June, where 37 people were stopped and most were charged with public order offences. The Inspectorate said no complaints had been filed but the probe will proceed under its official mandate, and it has been urged by the Serbian and Kosovar ombudspersons, the Orthodox Church and the Serbian government to ensure compliance with international human‑rights standards.

Separately, the IPK marked its 20th anniversary, with Kosovo officials highlighting the institution’s role in enhancing police accountability, integrity and public trust. Prime Minister Albin Kurti and President Albulena Haxhiu praised the body’s independent oversight, investigation of complaints and contribution to police professionalism over two decades.
