Kosovo Police marks 27th anniversary with calls for modernization

Kosovo officials marked the 27th anniversary of the Kosovo Police with ceremonies in Pristina, highlighting the institution's growth from 176 original cadets in 1999 to over 9,000 officers today.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that Kosovo is safer than ever, noting the establishment of more than 20 police stations and bases in the northern region. He linked increased police presence to the recent discovery of mass graves in Zubin Potok and announced that the formation of a Gendarmerie will provide additional security reinforcement.

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu noted that the police maintain high public trust, with over 80 percent of citizens ranking them among the most trusted institutions. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Xhelal Sveçla emphasized the role of professionalism and courage in maintaining sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Political figures also addressed future needs. Deputy Burim Ramadani called for a national program to prioritize police modernization, including doubling salaries, increasing budgets, enhancing cyber security units, and improving social and health benefits for officers.
