Kosovo political crisis deepens as parties urge functional government and EU integration

EU reporter Riho Terras warned that Kosovo has lost a year to a perpetual cycle of elections and campaigns, hampering reforms and EU accession progress. He called for the swift formation of a functional coalition government to launch the planned reforms and highlighted the importance of a stable administration for negotiations on EU candidate status. Terras noted that recent visits by senior EU officials have reinforced the message that Kosovo is on a positive path, while also pointing out that five EU member states still do not recognise Kosovo and urging the European Commission to grant candidate status regardless.

Domestic commentators criticised the current political climate as a spectacle lacking dialogue, with parties using inflammatory language amid economic hardships such as low wages and high inflation. Former Constitutional Court head Enver Hasani argued that the post‑election appointment of the prime minister without first electing a new president is unconstitutional and urged adherence to the court’s rulings. Deputy LDK leader Lutfi Haziri condemned mismanaged urban projects in Gjilan, accusing authorities of lacking transparency and demanding prosecutor intervention, noting that €178 million in international funding remains unused.

These remarks reflect a broader concern that political infighting and procedural disputes are stalling Kosovo’s reform agenda and its European integration efforts.
