Kosovo political leaders warn of potential constitutional crisis
Political leaders from the Alliance party have warned of a deepening crisis in Kosovo regarding the election of a new president and the functionality of the Assembly.
Besnik Tahiri stated that the political situation has become more serious than previously discussed, noting that the Assembly is currently non-functional. He emphasized that parliamentary commissions are not permanent and that the approval of laws requires their functionalization. Tahiri also noted difficulties in securing necessary signatures for legislative initiatives following September 16.
Ardian Gjini warned that if a new president is not elected by October 5, Kosovo could enter a ‘constitutional catastrophe’. He argued that without a president, there would be no official authorized to declare elections or mandate a future Prime Minister. Gjini highlighted that the burden on the judges of the Constitutional Court is currently greater than in any previous situation and cautioned against legal interpretations that would allow an acting president to extend their mandate indefinitely.
