Kosovo political parties face October 6 deadline to elect new president
Kosovo's political parties have yet to reach an agreement on a candidate for the presidency, facing a strict constitutional deadline. The Kosovo Constitutional Court clarified that the 60-day window for electing a new president began on August 8 and is set to expire on October 6. Failure to elect a president by this date would trigger new parliamentary elections.
Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) leader Bedri Hamza indicated that his party is open to discussing the presidency with the Vetëvendosje Movement, provided that the legislative proposal regarding the Specialized Chambers in The Hague is approved. Prime Minister Albin Kurti has expressed opposition to holding new elections, arguing they would be unnecessary and would merely repeat previous results.
The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has also signaled its readiness to participate in the process to ensure institutional functionality. Meanwhile, the Assembly is scheduled to meet to swear in new deputies and elect a deputy chairman from the PDK, even as the presidential vacancy remains unresolved.
