Bekim Sejdiu named joint presidential candidate for Kosovo
The ruling Vetëvendosje (VV) party and the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) have reached a political agreement to support Bekim Sejdiu as a joint candidate for the presidency of Kosovo. Sejdiu, a law professor, former diplomat, and former judge of the Constitutional Court, is intended to serve as a consensus figure to end a prolonged institutional deadlock.
LDK leadership has unanimously approved the agreement, viewing it as a necessary step to ensure institutional stability and facilitate Kosovo’s path toward European Union integration. However, the agreement faces internal opposition within the LDK. Deputy Avdullah Hoti has publicly rejected the candidacy, arguing that Sejdiu does not meet the criteria of a unifying figure and that the decision does not reflect the party’s principles or the interests of its electorate.
Additionally, LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku reported that six LDK deputies have refused to support the candidate. Abdixhiku warned that if the agreement fails to secure the necessary 80 votes in the 120-member Assembly, the country may be forced into new elections. While the agreement aims to stabilize the state, the political divide within the LDK and the refusal of certain deputies to follow party decisions present significant challenges to the successful election of the president.
