Kosovo political shifts follow protests and new presidential election
Political analysts and advisors are debating the impact of recent protests in Kosovo on the election of the new president, Justina Shiroka Pula, and legislative changes regarding the Specialist Chambers.
Publicist Kim Mehmeti suggested that protests supporting former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders may have influenced political developments. He criticized opposition parties for potentially using youth unrest to undermine Prime Minister Albin Kurti, noting that the presidential election occurred just minutes before the Constitutional Court's deadline. Despite the timing, Mehmeti described the elected president as a suitable candidate.
Xhelil Bajrami, political advisor to Ali Ahmeti, stated that protests by former KLA members exerted pressure on the political factor, affecting both the presidency and the Law on the Specialist Chambers. Bajrami argued that the new law, which expands the jurisdiction of the Specialist Court, is critical for Kosovo's stability. He also called on President Shiroka Pula to exercise her powers to grant presidential pardons to the four former KLA leaders sentenced by the court, claiming their convictions were politically motivated.
