Albin Kurti holds talks with opposition leaders to form Kosovo’s new institutions

Following the 7 June parliamentary election in Kosovo, Vetëvendosje (LVV) secured 53 of the 120 seats and must secure a parliamentary quorum to constitute the Assembly, appoint a prime‑minister, and elect a president. Prime‑minister‑in‑waiting Albin Kurti met first with the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) leader Bedri Hamza at 09:00 in the Assembly and later, at 18:00, with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) leader Lumir Abdixhiku, accompanied by former president Vjosa Osmani. Kurti described both meetings as “constructive” but said no concrete agreement had been reached. Hamza announced that PDK will remain in opposition during this mandate, adding, “PDK në këtë mandat është e gatshme të jetë në opozitë”. Kurti stressed the need for a consensus‑based president, stating that “për zgjedhjen e presidentit përgjegjësia bie mbi të gjitha partitë” and that the candidate should be a non‑partisan figure with proven national credentials. He also criticised the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo for refusing his invitation. The parties agreed to continue negotiations to create the new institutions and avoid fresh elections, but a final deal has not yet been finalized.
