Kosovo prison officials accused of assault in Denmark

Two Kosovo correctional officials have been released from custody in Denmark following allegations of assaulting an inmate at Vestre Prison on October 5, 2026. While the officials deny the charges, prosecutors allege they acted in coordination to strike the prisoner multiple times with punches to the face and body.

The officials were in Denmark for a six-month training program to prepare for duties at the Gjilan prison in Kosovo, which Denmark is leasing to house non-EU and non-EEA citizens deported from Denmark. A judge granted their release, citing no flight risk as they are employed by the Danish Prison and Probation Service and reside in Denmark.

In response to the incident, Ina Eliasen, Director of the Danish Prison and Probation Service, stated the agency will review whether training and practical supervision for Kosovar officials are sufficient. She characterized the event as an isolated incident, noting that previous experiences with the officials had been positive.
