KLA leaders sentenced by The Hague spark protests in Skopje and Pristina
Protests have erupted in Skopje and Pristina following the verdict from the Specialist Chambers in The Hague regarding former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders. The court sentenced former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi to 25 years in prison each, while Kadri Veseli received 18 years and Rexhep Selimi received 13 years.
The defendants were found guilty of war crimes, including unlawful or arbitrary arrest and detention, ill-treatment, torture, and murder. However, they were acquitted of crimes against humanity.
In Skopje, demonstrators gathered at Skanderbeg Square under the slogan ‘Not in my name’, with political figures including Ali Ahmeti in attendance. Similar large-scale demonstrations have occurred in Pristina, where thousands have gathered over several nights to express solidarity with the former leaders, many of whom are viewed as heroes of the Kosovo independence movement.
