Kosovo to certify June election results, opening path to new parliament

Kosovo’s Supreme Court has dismissed five administrative appeals against the June 7 parliamentary election results, clearing the way for the Central Election Commission (KQZ) to certify the outcomes. The commission is scheduled to meet on 8 July to officially certify the results, which gave Vetëvendosje 53 of the 120 seats, while the Democratic Party secured 22 seats, the Democratic League 18 seats and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo 7 seats.

Following certification, the constitution requires a constitutive session of the Assembly within 30 days, after which a new government can be formed. Vetëvendosje, holding a parliamentary majority, says it has the votes to form the new cabinet but must still reach a consensus with other parties to elect a new president – a process that needs a two‑thirds parliamentary majority. Opposition parties have set conditions, and failure to agree could trigger another election.

The certification also marks the end of the legal phase of the election dispute, with no further challenges expected. Political leaders have called for compromise to avoid a repeat of the early elections that were held after the previous presidential stalemate.
