Kosovo's Albin Kurti says elections were imposed as court blocks acting president from appointing him

Interim prime minister Albin Kurti told Austria's Die Presse that the recent parliamentary elections in Kosovo were imposed on his government, but Vetëvendosje still emerged as the strongest political force, securing about 43 % of the vote (excluding diaspora ballots). He said the final results are awaited and that coalition talks with other parties will follow.

Legal scholar Enver Hasani explained that a Kosovo Constitutional Court ruling on 25 March 2026 bars acting president Albulena Haxhiu from decreeing Kurti—or any other candidate—as prime minister. The court clarified that the decree power belongs to an elected president, not an interim office holder, marking a change from previous practice.

Kurti emphasized the victory, stating, “Kjo është fitorja jonë e pestë në shtatë vitet e fundit. Tani kemi 43 për qind,” while Hasani noted, “Sipas aktgjykimit të Kushtetueses, Albulena Haxhiu nuk mund ta dekretojë Albin Kurtin për kryeministër.”
