KOSPI recovers 7,000 level on AI and semiconductor optimism

The KOSPI has recovered the 7,000 level for the first time in 33 trading days, closing at 7,051.64. This rally was primarily driven by optimism surrounding the artificial intelligence sector, specifically following the release of OpenAI’s next-generation model, GPT-6 Astra. The new model, which demonstrates enhanced reasoning and computer usage capabilities, has fueled expectations for increased demand in data centers, high-performance GPUs, and high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

Major South Korean semiconductor companies, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, led the market gains. While individual investors in South Korea engaged in significant net selling of semiconductor stocks over a recent four-day period, the market was supported by buying from foreign investors and institutions.

Despite the semiconductor-led growth, market volatility persists due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices. Additionally, reports that Intel plans to increase PC CPU prices by 10% in early October contributed to movement within the technology sector.
