KOSPI recovers from 3% drop as Samsung and SK Hynix drive buybacks

The KOSPI index experienced significant volatility, dropping over 3% during early trading on August 31 due to concerns over U.S. interest rate hikes and hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium. However, the index managed a late-session recovery to close up 0.46% at 6820.02.

This rebound was largely driven by massive treasury stock buybacks from major semiconductor firms. Samsung Electronics is executing a 15 trillion won buyback program through November 21, while SK Hynix is conducting a 40 trillion won program through November 19. These actions, along with significant net purchases by other legal entities, helped offset heavy selling by foreign and institutional investors.

External pressures remain, including rising international oil prices—with WTI reaching the $85 level—following military tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Additionally, market participants are closely watching upcoming August export data for signs of continued strength in the semiconductor sector.
