KOSPI plunges below 5,000 level amid AI data center regulation fears

The KOSPI index experienced a severe decline on November 6, dropping more than 8% and falling below the 5,000 level for the first time in approximately nine months. The sharp downturn triggered a first-stage circuit breaker on the KOSPI market at approximately 9:03 AM, resulting in a 20-minute suspension of trading.

The market volatility was largely driven by concerns following the U.S. midterm elections, where Democratic Party victories have fueled fears of increased regulations on AI data center construction. Investors are concerned that new policies regarding power consumption and water usage could stall large-scale AI infrastructure investments. This sentiment was exacerbated by a massive sell-off in U.S. technology stocks, including a significant drop in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.

Major South Korean semiconductor companies were hit hard. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix saw significant price drops, with SK Hynix falling by as much as 11.71% during the session. The KOSDAQ index also faced downward pressure, triggering a sell-side sidecar. While some analysts suggest the decline may be an overreaction to regulatory uncertainty, the sudden loss in market value has caused significant distress among individual investors.
