South Korea economy faces stock volatility and employment disparities

South Korea is facing complex economic challenges characterized by stock market volatility and labor market disparities. The KOSPI index recently experienced significant fluctuations, dropping sharply due to concerns over AI investment profitability and semiconductor demand, before staging a recovery. This volatility was exacerbated by the release of DeepSeek's V4.1-Flash model, which claims to require significantly less high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and SSD storage, fueling fears regarding the future demand for memory chips produced by giants like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

The National Pension Service (NPS) has also been heavily impacted by this market downturn, seeing its stock valuation decrease by approximately 182 trillion won in just over 100 days. The majority of these losses were concentrated in semiconductor holdings, specifically Samsung and SK Hynix.

On the labor front, while manufacturing employment saw its first increase in 27 months, overall employment growth has slowed. Most notably, youth employment (ages 15-29) has declined for 46 consecutive months. Additionally, South Korean household debt has surpassed the 2,000 trillion won milestone for the first time, highlighting a growing gap between corporate profits and household financial stability.
