West African legal updates: Kossandji clashes and Norbert Zongo case

In Côte d'Ivoire, 18 people have been indicted and placed under detention following violent community clashes in Kossandji, located in the Alépé department. In Burkina Faso, the long-running legal case regarding the assassination of investigative journalist Norbert Zongo has faced a new procedural delay. Although the Court of Appeal of Ouagadougou confirmed a decision on July 30, 2026, to refer three suspects—Wanga Christophe Combasséré, Banagoulo Yaro, and Paul François Compaoré—to trial, the proceedings have been suspended. This follows a cassation appeal filed by defense counsel on July 31, 2026, which halts the immediate commencement of the trial while the highest judicial instance reviews the matter.
