Kostas Agorastos convicted for negligence in 2020 Thessaly floods

The Larissa Court of Appeals has unanimously found former Thessaly Regional Governor Kostas Agorastos guilty of negligence regarding the ‘Ianos’ extreme weather event in September 2020. The court imposed a 15-month prison sentence, which is suspended for three years. The conviction stems from negligence that caused flooding, endangering lives and property in the Karditsa region.

Agorastos faces several other legal challenges, including being referred to trial alongside 17 other officials regarding the nine deaths caused by the ‘Daniel’ storms in September 2023. Additionally, he is a defendant in the Tempi train crash investigation, facing charges of breach of duty related to the clearing of debris at the accident site.
