Kostas Lalios on Mount Athos Heritage and 1994 Preservation Plan
Greek writer Kostas Lalios authored a multi‑part essay titled “Mount Athos – Eternal State”, parts G and D, dedicated to the memory of several late Greek figures such as Andreas Papandreou, Kostis Moskov, Geron Vasileios Gontakakis, Archbishop Anastasius Giannoulatos and Dionysis Savvopoulos. He describes the Athos peninsula’s geography – about 350 km², 60 km long, peaks reaching 2,033 m and surrounding sea depths of roughly 1,000 m – and recounts its mythological and historical significance.
The essay also outlines past preservation actions by the Greek Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works and the Center for the Protection of Holy Mountain Heritage (KEDAK). It highlights 1994 as a turning point when an integrated program for Mount Athos was launched, aiming for coordinated restoration and management, though Lalios notes the effort was limited in scope and impact.
