Kota Kinabalu parking fines reach RM40,000 for single owners

The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has revealed that some vehicle owners have accumulated up to 200 outstanding parking compounds, with total debts reaching RM40,000. Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah noted that these records indicate repeated offenses by certain individuals.

To manage these high debts, DBKK is allowing owners to apply for installment payments and submit appeals regarding the total amount owed. The Mayor urged affected owners to contact the DBKK Enforcement Department immediately to manage their vehicle claims.

Towing actions are being implemented as a final measure to ensure roads and pedestrian walkways remain unobstructed, particularly in high-complaint areas such as Pasar Besar Kota Kinabalu, Anjung Kinabalu, Sinsuran, and the SAFMA night market. Officials stated that sirens and announcements are used to warn drivers to move their vehicles before towing occurs. While local laws allow for the auctioning of seized vehicles, the Mayor clarified that DBKK currently only auctions abandoned or junk vehicles to address cleanliness and safety issues, rather than those seized for parking violations.
