Kotoden introduces QR code digital ticketing system
Takamatsu Kotohira Electric Railroad (Kotoden) has launched a new digital ticketing system using QR codes to modernize its operations. Starting September 1, passengers can purchase tickets by scanning QR codes at stations using their smartphones. The system utilizes the ‘QUICK TRIP Ticket’ web app technology from Reship, allowing users to buy tickets through a web browser without needing to download a specific application.
To reduce costs and address labor shortages, the company plans to remove physical paper ticket machines from most stations, excluding 17 major hubs such as Takamatsu-Chikko and Busshozan. This move is driven by the high cost of upgrading traditional machines to support new currency and multilingual capabilities for inbound tourists, as well as the fact that nearly 90% of current passengers already use IC cards.
The digital system supports seven languages, including English and Chinese, to assist international travelers. For passengers without smartphones or IC cards, Kotoden will continue to accept cash settlements for fares.
