Kouvola proposes library network reforms and closures

A proposal for the restructuring of the Kouvola library service network for the years 2027–2035 is moving toward decision-making by the sports and culture committee. The plan aims to adapt services to population trends, the economic situation, and facility needs while securing services required by library law.

The proposal suggests closing the Koria and Haanoja libraries in 2027. It also includes relocations and changes for other branches: the Myllykoski library would move to the former Viiala kindergarten facilities to create a multi-purpose space, and the Elimäki library would see increased self-service hours and a planned move to Kartanokoulu.

By implementing these changes, the city aims to achieve annual savings of approximately 225,000 euros, primarily through reduced facility and personnel costs. The main libraries in Kouvola, Kuusankoski, Inkeroinen, and Valkeala are expected to remain in their current locations.
