Kozani implements school buffer zones via Just Streets program

The Municipality of Kozani is implementing the European “Just Streets” program to redesign environments surrounding local schools. The initiative focuses on creating “School Buffer Zones,” which act as protective safety cushions between school grounds and heavy urban traffic.

Eleftheria Tanidou, head of the municipality’s technical services, stated that the project aims to prioritize pedestrians—specifically children—over automobiles. The intervention is not limited to road signage but involves comprehensive urban planning focused on road safety, student health, and the promotion of active mobility.

A key component of the project is the co-creation process involving the school community. Parents, teachers, and students participated in interactive workshops, questionnaires, and school walks to map out dangerous areas. The program also utilizes LiDAR sensors for technical implementation and includes a public awareness campaign to foster a sense of community ownership over public spaces.
