Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant increases Unit 5 capacity to 950 MW

The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant has begun a planned, gradual increase in the production capacity of its Unit 5 reactor. The procedure commenced at 10:00 AM on August 31, with the reactor reaching a stable operating level of 950 MW by 5:00 PM.

The capacity increase follows a rise in the water levels of the Danube River within Bulgarian territory. During much of August, record-low water levels and severe drought had imposed significant technological constraints on the plant.

Technical teams are maintaining 24-hour monitoring of water resources and hydro-technical structures to ensure safe and reliable operation. The plant management remains in constant contact with the Executive Agency ‘Research and Maintenance of the Danube River’ to monitor long-term water level forecasts.
